Van Paulus, apostel van Christus, elke dag en elke nacht, dank ik God, die ik net als mijn voorouders met een zuiver geweten dien. Als ik aan je tranen denk, verlang ik ernaar je terug te zien; dat zal me met vreugde vervullen. Ik denk vaak aan het oprechte geloof dat je grootmoeder Loïs en je moeder Eunike hadden en dat – daarvan ben ik overtuigd – jij nu ook hebt.
Daarom spoor ik je aan het vuur brandend te houden van de gave die God je schonk toen ik je de handen oplegde. God heeft ons niet een geest van lafhartigheid gegeven, maar een geest van kracht, liefde en bezonnenheid. Schaam je er dus niet voor om van onze Heer te getuigen; schaam je ook niet voor mij, die omwille van hem gevangenzit, maar deel in het lijden voor het evangelie, met de kracht die God je geeft. Hij heeft ons gered en ons geroepen tot een heilige taak.

Je luistert naar the Lord is my light van Margaret Rizza.
Ik richt mijn aandacht op God, op zijn aanwezigheid in mij, rondom mij.
Hij is de Schepper van de kosmos, van de zon en de maan,
van de aarde, van elke molecule, elk atoom, van alles wat is.
God is in elke hartslag, in elke ademhaling. Hij is bij me. Hier en nu.
De lezing van vandaag is uit de tweede brief van Paulus aan Timoteüs, hoofdstuk 1, vanaf vers 1.
Kun je de boodschap van Paulus aan Timoteüs ontvangen als een boodschap aan jou, de boodschap van ‘genade, barmhartigheid en vrede van God, de Vader, en van Christus Jezus, onze Heer’? Als je dat kunt – wat voor gevoel geeft je dat dan?
Stel dat iemand jouw geloof zou omschrijven als een ‘oprecht geloof’, hoe zou je je daarbij voelen? Bemoedigd? Verlegen? In de war?
En als deze woorden direct tot jou gezegd zouden zijn, dat ‘je een gave in je hebt die God je schonk’ – een gave die je brandend kunt houden – wat zou je daar dan mee willen doen?
Zou dit allemaal waar zijn? Zouden al die veronderstellingen werkelijk waar zijn? Als je opnieuw naar de lezing luistert, hoor deze woorden dan als tot jou hier en nu gesproken.
De lezing zegt ons dat onze roeping en de gaven die we ontvangen, vrijelijk door God zijn gegeven en niet ons eigen maaksel zijn of door ons verdiend of het resultaat van onze inspanningen. Welke gave – die je niet verdiend hebt – zou je God nu willen vragen? Bid erom met je eigen woorden.
