Laat het werk aan de tempel van God ongestoord voortgang vinden. De gouverneur en de oudsten van de Judeeërs mogen de tempel herbouwen op zijn vroegere plaats. En ik heb bevel gegeven dat u de oudsten van de Judeeërs moet steunen bij de bouw van de tempel van God: zij moeten de kosten steeds volledig vergoed krijgen uit de koninklijke schatkist, uit de belastingopbrengst van de provincie Trans-Eufraat, zolang als nodig is.
De oudsten van de Judeeërs vorderden gestaag met de bouw, dankzij het optreden van de profeet Haggai en van Zacharia, de kleinzoon van Iddo. Zij voltooiden de tempelbouw zoals de God van Israël en de Perzische koningen Cyrus, Darius en Artaxerxes bevolen hadden. In het zesde regeringsjaar van koning Darius, op de derde dag van de maand adar, was de tempel gereed. De Israëlieten, de priesters, de Levieten en de overige teruggekeerde ballingen, vierden de inwijding van de tempel van God met vreugde, en daarvoor brachten zij de volgende offers: honderd stieren, tweehonderd rammen en vierhonderd lammeren. Daarnaast offerden zij nog twaalf geitenbokken als reinigingsoffer voor heel Israël, één voor elk van de twaalf stammen. Ook werden de priesters ingedeeld in hun klassen en de Levieten in hun afdelingen, voor de dienst van God in Jeruzalem, volgens de voorschriften in het boek van Mozes.
De teruggekeerde ballingen vierden Pesach op de veertiende dag van de eerste maand. De priesters en de Levieten hadden zich allemaal gereinigd, zij allen waren rein. Ze slachtten het pesachlam voor alle ballingen, voor hun medepriesters, en voor zichzelf.

‘Ziet, zegent nu de Heer, alle dienaren des Heren die staan in de tempel van de Heer, en in de hoven van het huis van onze God. Heft uw handen op naar het heiligdom en zegent de Heer. De Heer zal u zegenen vanuit Sion, die hemel en Aarde gemaakt heeft.’
De lezing van vandaag is uit het boek van Ezra, hoofdstuk 6, vanaf vers 7.
We vervolgen het verhaal van gisteren, waarin de bouw een doorstart krijgt nadat de werkzaamheden jarenlang hebben stilgelegen.
Gisteren keken we naar het huis van God in de wereld om ons heen. Laten we vandaag eens wat meer in onze eigen schulp kruipen. In deze lezing wordt het herstel van de tempel voltooid. De overredingskracht van één profeet - Ezra - was onvoldoende om de bouwvakkers weer aan het werk te krijgen. Pas na het optreden van zowel profeet Haggai als Zacharia, werd de bouw hervat. Herken ik daarvan iets bij mijzelf? Heeft mijn geestelijk leven een periode lang stilgelegen? Wat overtuigde mij ervan toch de draad met God op te pakken? Gebeurde dit pas na herhaald aandringen?
Wat was de motivatie die uiteindelijk de doorslag gaf? Is dit een boodschap die ik nu aan Jezus wil voorleggen? Aan een vriend in nood?
De lezing komt nogmaals voorbij. Let er speciaal op voor wie het pesachlam geslacht wordt.
Om de renovatie van de tempel te vieren worden offers gebracht voor alle stammen van Israël, zo ook aan ballingen. Hoe is dat voor mij? Voel ik me nog steeds een balling? Wil ik een offer brengen voor ballingen in mijn omgeving? Aan het einde van dit gebed kan ik alle gedachten die bij me naar boven zijn gekomen voor Jezus brengen. Hij luistert, als een vriend naar een vriend.
