Maar de wetgeleerde wilde zich rechtvaardigen en vroeg aan Jezus: ‘Wie is mijn naaste?’ Toen vertelde Jezus hem het volgende: ‘Er was eens iemand die van Jeruzalem naar Jericho reisde en onderweg werd overvallen door rovers, die hem zijn kleren uittrokken, hem mishandelden en hem daarna halfdood achterlieten. Toevallig kwam er een priester langs, maar toen hij het slachtoffer zag liggen, liep hij met een boog om hem heen. Er kwam ook een Leviet langs, maar bij het zien van het slachtoffer liep ook hij met een boog om hem heen. Een Samaritaan echter, die op reis was, kreeg medelijden toen hij hem zag liggen. Hij ging naar de gewonde man toe, goot olie en wijn over zijn wonden en verbond ze. Hij zette hem op zijn eigen rijdier en bracht hem naar een logement, waar hij voor hem zorgde. De volgende morgen gaf hij twee denarie aan de eigenaar en zei: “Zorg voor hem, en als u meer kosten moet maken, zal ik u die op mijn terugreis vergoeden.” Wie van deze drie is volgens u de naaste geworden van het slachtoffer van de rovers?’ De wetgeleerde zei: ‘De man die medelijden met hem heeft getoond.’ Toen zei Jezus tegen hem: ‘Doet u dan voortaan net zo.’

‘Twaalf rovers plunderden, stalen en moorden. Mooier kunnen we hun daden niet verwoorden. De rover Kodiyar stal zelfs een meisje van de proleten. Maar haar zuiver hart, bracht God terug in zijn geweten. Hij verliet zijn criminele kameraden, en, heeft het overvallen helemaal opgegeven. Daarna ging Chief Kodiyar naar de monniken. Om enkel nog Gods woord te prediken.’
De lezing is genomen uit het Evangelie volgens Lucas, hoofdstuk 10, vanaf vers 29.
Als je dit verhaal hoort met welke persoon identificeer jij jezelf?
Het onfortuinlijke slachtoffer? De Samaritaan - de geminachte buitenstaander? De priester of de Leviet? Wellicht de wetgeleerde die Jezus de vraag stelt? Kun je bedenken welke rol jij in dit verhaal zou spelen?
De wetgeleerde vraagt aan Jezus: "wie is mijn naaste?" Hij wil een definitie van Jezus, een heldere, duidelijke grens. Zodat hij weet welke mensen zijn naasten zijn en wie niet. Welke mensen hij moet liefhebben en welke hij kan negeren. Herken je deze behoefte?
Merk je dit verlangen wel eens bij jezelf?
Als je de tekst nogmaals hoort, luister dan naar de subtiele verschuiving van de vraag van de wetgeleerde: "wie is mijn naaste?" naar de vraag van Jezus: "wie is de naaste geweest?"
Misschien is die verschuiving van bezorgdheid over grenzen en begrenzingen naar een meer genereuze, openhartige zorg voor anderen - wie dat ook zijn - er een die ook in mijn hart moet plaatsvinden. Jezus nodigt mij uit: "Doe dan voortaan net als hij." Kan ik Hem nu vragen mij te laten zien hoe? Om mij te laten zien wie het nodig heeft dat ik vandaag een naaste ben?
