Toen Jerobeam in die tijd een keer de stad uit ging, kwam hij de profeet Achia uit Silo tegen. Achia droeg een nieuwe mantel. Ze waren helemaal alleen in het open veld. Achia greep zijn nieuwe mantel en scheurde hem in twaalf stukken. Toen zei hij tegen Jerobeam: ‘Neem tien van deze stukken, want dit zegt de HEER, de God van Israël: Hierbij scheur ik het koningschap van Salomo los en geef ik jou tien stammen. Eén stam zal ik hem laten houden, omwille van mijn dienaar David en omwille van Jeruzalem, de stad die ik uit alle steden van Israëls stammen heb uitgekozen. Zo brak Israël met het koningshuis van David, en dat is zo gebleven tot op de dag van vandaag.

‘Wat is menselijk? De schaduw van een engel? Of een kreet van verlangen naar de vereniging van zielen? Zorg; en er zal voor je gezorgd worden.’
De lezing van vandaag is genomen uit het eerste Boek der Koningen, vanaf hoofdstuk 11, vanaf vers 29.
Kun je je herinneren, wanneer het de laatste keer is geweest dat je een stuk kleding met je blote handen kapotscheurde, zoals Achia dat hier deed? Het scheurende geluid dat ontstaat wanneer er honderden kleine draadjes knappen, de een na de ander? En de vormeloze lappen die er over blijven? En de losse vezels die door het luchtruim zweven?
En wijd dan een ogenblik aan de vraag, welke scheidingen in de wereld het meeste je aandacht vragen: misschien niet die tussen de twaalf stammen van Israël, zoals hier vermeld – maar misschien scheidingen tussen landen, of godsdiensten, of etnische groepen, of tussen arm en rijk?
En breng dan deze twee beelden samen: kun je deze scheiding tussen mensen beleven zoals het scheuren van een kledingstuk, zoals de lezing suggereert? – zoals een scheur in het weefsel van de mensheid?
Als je de lezing opnieuw beluistert, stel je dan voor, dat de scheiding waar je je zorgen over maakt, in beeld komt, en stel je voor dat het is alsof er een kledingstuk voor je ogen in tweeën wordt gescheurd: wat je dan hoort en ziet. Wat doet die voorstelling met je?
En als deze tijd van gebed zijn einde nadert, spreek dan tot God over wat deze beelden en ideeën waar je mee bezig was, voor betekenis voor je hadden. Hoe heeft God tegen je gesproken? Hoe wil je antwoorden?
