Gelukkig is de mens die in de beproeving staande blijft. Want wie de proef doorstaat, ontvangt als lauwerkrans het leven, zoals God heeft beloofd aan iedereen die hem liefheeft. Wie in verleiding komt, moet niet beweren: ‘Die verleiding komt van God.’ Want God stelt niemand aan verleiding bloot, zoals hij zelf ook niet door iets slechts in verleiding kan worden gebracht. Iedereen komt in verleiding door zijn eigen begeerte, die hem lokt en meesleept. Is de begeerte bevrucht, dan baart ze zonde; en is de zonde volgroeid, dan brengt ze de dood voort. Geliefde broeders en zusters, vergis u niet: elke goede gave, elk volmaakt geschenk komt van boven, van de Vader van de hemellichten; bij hem is nooit enige verandering of verduistering waar te nemen. Hij wilde ons door de verkondiging van de waarheid tot leven roepen, om ons de eersten te maken in zijn schepping.

De lezing van vandaag is genomen uit de brief van Jakobus, hoofdstuk 1, vanaf vers 12.
‘Gelukkig is de mens die in de beproeving staande blijft’, zegt Jakobus ons. Maar de sleutel tot ‘beproeving’ is het waarnemen. Goede mensen worden niet verleid door wat op hen als slecht overkomt – zij worden verleid door wat goed lijkt, door dingen die in het geheel niet op verleiding lijken. Welke goede dingen zouden misschien toch verleidingen voor mij blijken te zijn? Dingen die ik misschien overdrijf of te groot maak, ondanks mijn beste bedoelingen?
‘Vergis u niet’, zegt Jakobus. Mij niet vergissen betekent de waarheid kennen over mezelf, mijn krachten en zwakheden, dat wat mij beïnvloedt. Zijn er waarheden over mijzelf die ik in zekere zin ken, maar die ik moeilijk onder ogen kan zien?
Nu ik de lezing opnieuw hoor, bemerk ik de goedheid van God die in iedere zin van deze tekst geschreven staat.
Wetende dat God al mijn falen en fouten kent en toch van me houdt, hoef ik niet net te doen alsof, hoef ik mezelf niet groter voor te doen dan ik ben. Ik kan eerlijk met God spreken en Hem vragen om zijn hulp– ik kan Gods hulp nú vragen – bij het omgaan met ongeacht welk probleem.
