Toen de dag van het Pinksterfeest aanbrak waren ze allen bij elkaar. Plotseling klonk er uit de hemel een geluid als van een hevige windvlaag, dat het huis waar ze zich bevonden geheel vulde. Er verschenen aan hen een soort vlammen, die zich als vuurtongen verspreidden en zich op ieder van hen neerzetten, en allen werden vervuld van de heilige Geest en begonnen op luide toon te spreken in vreemde talen, zoals hun door de Geest werd ingegeven. In Jeruzalem woonden destijds vrome Joden, die afkomstig waren uit ieder volk op aarde. Toen het geluid weerklonk, dromden ze samen en ze raakten geheel in verwarring omdat ieder de apostelen en de andere leerlingen in zijn eigen taal hoorde spreken. Ze waren buiten zichzelf van verbazing en zeiden: ‘Het zijn toch allemaal Galileeërs die daar spreken? Hoe kan het dan dat wij hen allemaal in onze eigen moedertaal horen? Parten, Meden en Elamieten, inwoners van Mesopotamië, Judea en Kappadocië, mensen uit Pontus en Asia, Frygië en Pamfylië, Egypte en de omgeving van Cyrene in Libië, en ook Joden uit Rome die zich hier gevestigd hebben, Joden en proselieten, mensen uit Kreta en Arabië – wij allen horen hen in onze eigen taal spreken over Gods grote daden.’

Vox Clamantis zingt het lied Veni creator, gecomponeerd door Arvo Pärt. ‘Kom Schepper, Geest, daal tot ons neer, Gij zijt de grote Trooster in de tijd, de bron waaruit het leven springt, het liefdevuur dat ons doordringt.’
De Evangelielezingen waarmee we gebeden hebben de afgelopen week hebben ons dicht bij Jezus gebracht. We zaten naast Hem bij het laatste Avondmaal, we hebben samen met Hem ontbeten na de Verrijzenis, we hebben zijn woorden geproefd en hebben in zijn ogen gekeken toen Hij vroeg “houd je van me?”
Hoe heb je die nabijheid van Jezus voor jezelf ervaren? Was het iets nieuws? Was het moeilijk – iets teveel van het goede? Wat was je gevoel bij deze ontmoetingen? Waren ze heel geladen? Of straalde het lichtheid en vreugde uit? Straalden ze warmte uit of een zekere zakelijkheid? Een gevoel van zwaarte, ongemak of vertrouwdheid?
In andere fragmenten die we deze week gehoord hebben, hebben we het enthousiasme en de moed bespeurd waarmee Paulus en de eerste Christenen hun geloof deelden en uitdroegen.
Maar vandaag denken we aan die grondleggende ervaring voor de vroege Kerk, het gebeuren dat we Pinksteren noemen. Het gebeurde toen de apostelen samen waren in Jeruzalem. Het wordt beschreven in de Handelingen van de Apostelen: hoofdstuk 2, vanaf vers 1.
Heb je het ooit meegemaakt dat je in een vreemd land was, of op een plek waar mensen een vreemde taal spraken en dat je dan ook onverwacht iemand je eigen taal hoorde spreken of je plaatselijke dialect?
Kun je je herinneren hoe dat voelde? De verrassing? De zo vreemde en toch vertrouwde woorden en het ritme? Dat moment van je een klein beetje “thuis” voelen?
Is dat wellicht een manier waarop God tot mij spreekt? Wanneer je ervaart dat je iets verteld wordt dat op een of andere manier en misschien op een beetje wonderlijke wijze, niet onbekend, niet vervreemdend is? Dat als het ware diep vanuit jezelf komt, “thuis” is voor jou, al vertrouwd in je mond en je hart?
Het tafereel van Pinksteren schildert een levendig en veelkleurig gebeuren – tongen van vuur, en krachtige wind….Als je dat fragment opnieuw leest, wat speelt zich dan af in je fantasie. Hoe zag het geheel er uit, wat hoorde je?
Over het algemeen ziet ons dagelijks leven er wel een beetje minder spectaculair uit dan deze dramatische gebeurtenis. Maar de Heilige Geest is niet minder aanwezig voor ONS NU dan TOEN voor HEN. Er mogen dan wel geen vlammen van vuur zijn of een krachtige wind. Maar Gods Geest is hier en nu aanwezig, op deze plek; aanwezig binnen in jou, omdat jij een tempel bent van de Heilige Geest. Beseffend dat Gods Geest met jou is op dit moment. Wat wil je tegen Hem zeggen?
Kom, Heilige Geest, vervul de harten van uw gelovigen en doorgloei hen met het vuur van uw liefde.
Zend uw Geest uit en wij zullen herschapen worden en U zult vernieuwen het aanschijn van de aarde.
