Toen aan de farao, de koning van Egypte, bericht werd dat het volk gevlucht was, kregen hij en zijn hovelingen spijt. ‘Hoe konden we Israël zomaar laten vertrekken!’ zeiden ze. ‘Nu zijn we onze slaven kwijt.’ De farao liet zijn strijdwagen inspannen en verzamelde zijn krijgsvolk. Hij nam de zeshonderd beste wagens van Egypte mee, en ook alle andere, stuk voor stuk bemand met officieren. De HEER zorgde ervoor dat de farao, de koning van Egypte, onverzettelijk bleef, zodat hij de achtervolging van de Israëlieten inzette, die onbevreesd vertrokken waren. De Egyptenaren achtervolgden hen, en haalden hen in bij Pi-Hachirot, waar het volk van Israël zijn kamp had opgeslagen, dicht bij de zee, tegenover Baäl-Sefon. Toen de Israëlieten de farao zagen naderen, met al zijn paarden, wagens en ruiters en al zijn voetvolk, werden ze doodsbang en riepen ze de HEER luidkeels om hulp. Ze zeiden tegen Mozes: ‘Waren er soms in Egypte geen graven, dat u ons hebt meegenomen om in de woestijn te sterven? Hoe kon u ons dit aandoen! Waarom hebt u ons uit Egypte weggehaald? Hebben we niet al in Egypte gezegd: “Laat ons toch met rust, laat ons maar als slaven voor de Egyptenaren werken, want dat is altijd nog beter dan om te komen in de woestijn”?’ Maar Mozes antwoordde het volk: ‘Wees niet bang, wacht rustig af. Dan zult u zien hoe de HEER vandaag voor u de overwinning behaalt. De Egyptenaren die u daar nu ziet, zult u hierna nooit meer terugzien. De HEER zal voor u strijden, u hoeft zelf niets te doen.’ De HEER zei tegen Mozes: ‘Waarom roep je mij te hulp? Zeg tegen de Israëlieten dat ze verder trekken. Jij moet je staf geheven houden boven de zee en zo het water splijten, zodat de Israëlieten dwars door de zee kunnen gaan, over droog land. Ik zal de Egyptenaren onverzettelijk maken zodat ze hen achterna gaan, en dan zal ik mijn majesteit tonen door de farao en zijn hele leger, zijn wagens en zijn ruiters, ten val te brengen. De Egyptenaren zullen beseffen dat ik de HEER ben, als ik in mijn majesteit de farao, met al zijn wagens en ruiters, ten val heb gebracht.’

De lezing van vandaag komt uit het boek Exodus, hoofdstuk 14, vanaf vers 5.
Stel je deze scène eens voor! Aan de ene kant van je is een onoverkomelijke hindernis, “de Rode Zee”, en aan de andere kant dondert een leger op je af van zeshonderd strijdwagens die de horizon domineren. Hoe voelt dat?
Rondom je zie je gezinnen, vrouwen, kinderen en mannen, maar geen leger, geen verdediging. Er is geen ontsnappen aan. Wat gaat er door je heen?
Maar bedenk: je bent hier omdat God veel moeite heeft gedaan om je vrij te krijgen uit de slavernij in Egypte. Jij bent Gods volk, God heeft je een nieuw huis, een nieuw leven belooft. God zegt: “Wees niet bang.” Dit is één van de 365 keer dat God in de heilige Schrift zegt: “Wees NIET bang.” Probeer je, terwijl je opnieuw luistert naar alles wat er om je heen gebeurt, te concentreren op deze woorden: “Wees niet bang.”
Misschien verlangt God dat we nooit bang zijn. Dit is een gelegenheid om te vertrouwen op God en zijn beloften. Zijn er gelegenheden in je leven waarbij je op God en zijn beloften kunt vertrouwen? Spreek nu met hem over dit alles.
